Several months ago, when I first bought and set up this website and portfolio, I wrote a post about how I wasn't comfortable with monetizing a hobby like graphic art. While this still holds relatively true, things have changed a bit, and people are now willing to pay me for what I make, usually due to requests. This is also in part because I have begun to print out these works so that the requester has them in physical form. Obviously, printing out a physical object and making sure it is delivered to them takes more time and money due to shipping and printing fees. But beyond that, I have been astounded by the support from friends and friends of friends alike, that they would actually go as far as to pay me for something that I originally wanted to do. So with that said, the point of this post is to say that I am now open for business.
Things that have changed
However, I don't think things will be drastically different, besides that you can now purchase things from me instead of just looking at lower-resolution versions of them. As much as this site is meant to be a portfolio, I suppose running a small store on the side doesn't hurt. So as of now, to explain the store (which you can find by clicking Store up top), here are the kinds of things I will be selling:
Prints: Generally, these are pieces that I do on a whim in my free time. Most of the time they will be B&W, with the occasional colors thrown in there, but I am willing to make them any colors requested. These will also generally be cheaper because they take less time than some of the more lengthy requests (which will be explained later).
Posters: I don't usually do posters due to the amount of information usually required to create them, but I am willing to concede as long as there is good communication of details. However, I can resize prints into poster form (with no loss of quality) if requested. Understand that this will undoubtedly be more expensive.
Requests: As with before, I am happy to take on requests from you if there is something specific you would like. However, these will still unfortunately be interest-based, meaning if I don't want to do it or can't find a good way to do it, I won't. (Here's a secret: I usually don't say no, so it can't hurt to try.) Requested artworks will be sold directly to the requester at a confidential price that will be discussed upon delivery. With the requester's consent, these pieces will be sold to the public at a later date and at a fixed price. Without the requester's consent, these will never be sold to the public. They will, however, still be featured in my portfolio.
- Logos: This fits in with the requests, with the added nuance that these generally take longer for me to make because it takes a different kind of creativity for me to differentiate between typography and icons or brands. Please be patient with this!
- Shirts: I don't have much experience with printing shirts, but I am still willing to design them. Unfortunately, I don't have any examples up yet of designs I have made in the past as they all died in a hard drive fire.
With all of the above, you may want a bigger or smaller size of the physical product, so I can print them out at a different size. Logically, a bigger copy means more expensive while a smaller copy means cheaper. The difference won't be large, unless you want to decorate your garage door. Then I have no words for you.
Furthermore, the time it takes from order to acquisition will be longer than most delivery services. This is because I do not have a predetermined quantity available for sale, so I print per request using an external business, and ship it out myself to reduce the shipping cost. Please be understanding of that, and I will do my best to get you what you paid for as quick as possible.
Hopefully that clears things up a little bit. In all honesty I'm just trying this out, so if it ends up not working, I will get rid of the shop system and revert to a more primitive way of conducting business. After all, I don't have any kind understanding of commerce, so this is all new to me.
