Designer Alex Dianocu has rendered a phone concept that he describes as "a Nokia-ish device," looking vaguely similar to the Nokia Lumia, and it looks great. Here is the full project on his Behance page. Since it is a concept and has no concrete specs (that I could find), this review will probably be shorter than the previous one I did.
We were both young when I first saw you
Me, a recent graduate, trying to become a designer of consumer electronics. You, a phone concept, undefined by any company. It was a match made in heaven.
The reason I love this concept so much is that it doesn't waste space. From some of the shots on the presentation, it becomes apparent that everything it placed where it needs to be. Given, it's a smartphone, so there's not much space to be wasted on the front anyway, but the concept phone places the headphone jack and camera at very well placed points on the frame. The headphone jack also looks like it determined the curvature of the sides, which I thought was interesting.
All your curves and all your edges
Another reason I find this design appealing is the curvature of the phone. As I just mentioned, the sides seem to coincide with the placement of the headphone jack, but the overall shape of the phone is something that would be easy to hold. My one criticism about this is that I would imagine that a completely curved edge is a bit harder to handle than the hard edges on the iPhones and the beveled edges on the Galaxy series, for example. However, I'm not an ergonomic expert, so I don't actually know. Nonetheless, the curves add a sleekness and smoothness to the design that I really like.
Speaking of curves, however, I think one thing that could be something new to this design is perhaps a curvature involving the entire phone so that it matches the curvature of a person's hand. I know there are some new technologies out there with curved glass, so it would be interesting to see how it fits into this design.
Again, since this is a phone concept rather than a phone being developed, I don't have much else to say about it, besides that I think overall, it is a very well-designed concept.
Don't forget to check out the rest of Alex's portfolio on Behance! He has some other really cool designs on there that I think is worth looking at.
